Why Agentic AI Is Operationally Different
A traditional AI feature is a tool used by a human. An agentic system is closer to a junior colleague — it takes actions, makes decisions within scope, and consumes both inputs and human attention in ways that ordinary software does not. The operating-model implications are substantial.
Who is accountable for the agent's decisions? How is the agent's work supervised and audited? What is the escalation protocol when the agent encounters something outside scope? How is the work the agent does measured for quality and value? Where Production Deployments Are Now Landing
Three operational categories are now producing real agentic deployments. Customer operations, where agents handle increasing portions of inbound queries, with escalation to humans on a clear protocol. Software engineering, where agents handle defined categories of code work with developer review.
Finance and back-office operations, where agents handle reconciliation, exception handling, and report generation tasks within defined limits. In each category, the value is real and the operating model is the difference between deployments that work and ones that consume more human supervision than the human work they replaced.
What Good Agentic Operating Model Looks Like
Three design principles distinguish good agentic deployments. First, scope discipline — agents are deployed against well-defined task categories, not open-ended responsibilities. The temptation to broaden scope is the single biggest source of failed deployments. Second, supervision architecture — explicit, designed protocols for what the agent does autonomously, what it escalates, and how its work is reviewed.
Third, value tracking — clear measurement of what the agent has actually done, with quality assessment, not just activity counts. Enterprises that build these three into the design from the start produce production-grade agentic deployments. Enterprises that deploy first and figure out the operating model later produce expensive, supervised demos.
